Orthodontics
Do you like your smile?
We all know that having an attractive smile with well positioned teeth makes communication with other people pleasant, gives self-confidence and increases personal self-esteem.
A poor smile, with gapped, crowded or protruding teeth is not only an esthetic problem, but also a functional anomaly that can lead to dental wear, trauma, caries and gum disease.
The objective of orthodontics is the mobility of the teeth seeking their occlusal normalization, above all, to correct functional disorders of mastication and esthetics.
What will my first visit be like?
On the first visit, the orthodontist will make a preliminary assessment of the state of the teeth and mouth in general, will make a clinical examination and request at least two X-rays to perform a radiographic study of the mouth in general.
Some molds of the mouth to be able to have in hand and check, shape and size of the teeth, the bite, relationship of the upper teeth with the lower teeth, measure the spaces that are necessary to reposition them or the spaces that are left over.
Finally a series of facial and dental photographs that serve to keep fresh the first visit and remember how it was at that time and how it evolves.
The second step consists of explaining the treatment. The orthodontist will clearly explain the treatment to be carried out, the possible side effects, limitations, risks and the results that can be obtained.
Types of appliances
Removable appliances are appliances that can be removed by the patient for cleaning, but when they are placed they are firmly attached to the teeth. These appliances apply controlled pressures on the teeth to be moved through the action of active mechanical elements, such as springs, archwires, screws, etc.
Fixed appliances is orthodontics formed by the combination of brackets, metal or ceramic elements attached to the teeth and metal archwires that pass through them. Fixed braces have the ability to individually move each and every tooth in any direction, which is not the case with other braces.
Brackets can be visible, such as metal brackets, or esthetic, such as ceramic brackets, which are translucent or transparent and stick to the outer surface of the teeth, taking their color. They can be placed on the external or internal side of the tooth (lingual orthodontics). The Invisalign technique is also available.
During orthodontic treatment, it is essential to pay special attention to oral health, brushing the teeth and braces correctly with specific products for orthodontic wearers.
